Thor 3D (redux?) in 13 seconds

That’s right, 3D. At the discount theater, with a $1.50 upgrade.  Conclusion? The movie is still a lot of fun. The two leads are perfectly cast. But in 3D? Just one more reminder that Avatar, which needed it to be a better movie, didn’t do us any favors by convincing theater owners that already-good movies needed it too.

Fantastic Mr. Fox redux in 13 seconds

Every time I see this movie I like it more.  It’s such a laid-back story, with laid-back everything (which is different from boring). Wes Anderson’s brand of comedy works here, and I wonder if the fact that I’m watching an animated film makes the disconnect I usually feel towards his movies’ eccentricities more palatable.

Predators redux in 13 seconds

Again, I’m surprised at how jacked Adrian Brody got for this movie. This time around the movie seemed more by-the-numbers, which isn’t a compliment. There’s just something about Schwarzeneggar’s bulk and swagger from the first movie that made his match-up with the Predator more epic. Since then it’s been one get-‘im-before-he-gets-you scenario after another. Predators is one of the better ones, but still.

The Losers redux in 13 seconds

I’ve seen this movie, like, three times in a year. Why? The action is decent and the performances, particularly by Chris Evans and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, are engaging, but the writing’s a little uninspired and cliched.  What it’s got is…it’s easy.  It’s the cinematic equivalent of Doritos.  You eat one and suddenly half the bag is gone.

Megamind redux in 13 seconds

What stood out to me this time around was the sophistication and delivery of the jokes. It’s a best argument I know for how you can’t make an animated movie and just pull people off the street to read the script.

Coraline redux in 13 seconds

There’s just something about the pacing of this film that feels quiet and somewhat creepy to me.  I know it’s completely intentional, and since I can’t put my finger on how they do it, it impresses me.  I think it’s my favorite of the stop-motion animation films that A Nightmare before Christmas kicked off.
