Random Things I discovered this weekend (Solo edition)

Filed under: Weekend Discoveries — kryptobrent @ 3:48 pm
  • I have some cool friends (this is more of a rediscovering)
  • My BBQ club, which meets and eats once a month, has a tremendous capacity to discuss the love life of one of our single members EVERY SINGLE TIME WE MEET.
  • Question: Is Resident Evil: Extinction deeply stupid?  Is it as bad as the two RezEv movies that came before it? Is it possible to butcher a zombie movie, when they should be the easiest to make?  And am I an idiot for knowing all this and, not just watching it, but renting it? Answer: Yes, yes, yes, and so?
  • I’ve wanted a flat screen TV for a long while now, and have been saving for one.  I was counting on the fact that sales during SuperBowl Sunday would drive down the price enough so I could get one.  Aaaaaaaaaand…I was right!  USA! USA!
  • Life without Darcy (who is in Kansas City for a few days, visiting a friend) is fun in some respects, but only because I know she’s coming back Wednesday.

Is it you? Are you the one?

Filed under: Someone's Out to Get Me — kryptobrent @ 1:14 pm

It all started back in 2006.  Remember when I was trying to score a Wii and I felt like someone was frustrating my every move?  The whole experience left me with a feeling of unease, but I let it go.

At the beginning of this year, I decided to really knuckle down and lose some weight.  It’s going well (thanks for asking).  Almost immediately, McDonalds opened a new restaurant practically across the street from me.  A couple weeks later, Burger King opened a restaurant close by.  And where I work, they’re now building both a Burger King and a Taco Bell.  What does it all mean?

Well, I know now.  It’s pretty simple, if you think about it. There is a vast, global conspiracy made up of evil, malevolent beings.  As is commonly thought, their twisted ambitions aren’t built around world domination or crippling the economy.  They exist to make me fat.  And broke.  And frustrated/bored/tired/etc.

I’m creating a new category in this blog, based on a penetrating observation from one Agent Fox Mulder: “Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean someone’s not out to get you.”  Preach it, brutha.

Random Things I discovered this weekend (There Will Be Bloat edition)

  • A new Burger King around the corner now helps me to enjoy my free day even more.  I needed that.
  • An 8 pack of Enteman’s donuts is a better purchase than a dozen–it helps me to eat less.  I consider this the accumulation of all my earthly wisdom.
  • Car shopping can be fun.  It can also be long and tedious.  Which one was it this weekend?  Yes.
  • I wore a t-shirt and shorts when we went test driving on Saturday.  I wore jeans and a leather jacket to test drive on Sunday.  I can’t figure this town out.
  • I still miss my Sentra.
  • We went and saw the movie “There Will Be Blood” Saturday night.  I recommend it highly.  Great themes, great character development.  Daniel Day-Lewis could be, in my opinion, the greatest actor alive today.

Today’s my birthday. It’s also the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

Just put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Travels with Sentra

Filed under: Shallow Thoughts — kryptobrent @ 1:11 pm

Darcy and I bought a new Ford Escape yesterday, but that’s not the big news.  The Big news is…I had to trade in my beloved 1993 Nissan Sentra.  The car that saw me through the transition from my early years with Campus Crusade, through my marriage, to our move here to Orlando, U-Haul trailer in tow.  I will confess, after I pulled the rest of our stuff out of it in the dealer parking lot, I gave it a little kiss.  When I turned the keys over I had a lump in my throat.  I was tempted to go home and a)put on pajamas, b)put on some country music, c)call up all my girlfriends and d)eat a gallon of ice cream.  I then realized that, with a-c, I don’t have any of those (especially c) and it wasn’t my free day, so no d.  Oh well.  I really, really loved that car.

We got $100 for it.  Sigh.

I’m a Hero.

Filed under: Shallow Thoughts — kryptobrent @ 11:14 am

Last night I picked up Guitar Hero for the Wii.  It’s a hard-to-find item, so I’m pretty (in a nod to my Southern California brothers) stoked.  Remember how excited I was to get a Wii when it first came out?  Since my new purchase (with accompanying guitar controller, no less), I figure I can now:

  • Play an electric guitar
  • Golf
  • Bowl
  • Box
  • Sword fight, and
  • Use an assortment of semi and automatic weapons

…all without actually knowing how do any of that stuff in real life!  Some would say, Brent, you fool, think of the life enrichment (and fresh air and exercise) you’re missing by not doing those things for real.  To which I say, yes, but think of all the cashola I’m saving by not buying fancy equipment or lessons.

Argument: finished.  Winner: Me!  Pass me some HoHos!

Random Things I discovered this weekend (Prodigal edition)

Filed under: Weekend Discoveries — kryptobrent @ 6:16 pm
  • First off, I discovered that I actually missed cataloging the minutia that constitutes my weekend.  I don’t know why.  Since I’m reasonably certain all of you experience weekends on some level, I doubt if much of this is of interest. Oh well!
  • Fruity Pebbles remains the Filet Mignon of breakfast cereals.
  • I still don’t get why people think The Exorcist is scary.
  • My wife and I were at the Mall at Milenia on Saturday.  We walked by a store named Anthropologie and she said, “Let’s go in!  This store has something for everybody!”  Upon exiting, I can tell you that this statement is FALSE.
  • The 80’s song “Footloose” is almost impossible not to sing along with (this is more of a rediscovering)
  • The 80’s song “I want to be a Cowboy” is almost impossible not to laugh at (I think this is unintentional on behalf of the artists).
  • Each week I am faced with a dilemma–should I stay up late and (this week) help Mario capture more power stars and further his quest to rescue Princess Peach, or should I go to bed earlier so I won’t be sleepy in church?
  • On a related note, I’m an idiot (this is more of a rediscovering).

Eating Broken Glass (or, Back to Staff Meetings)

Filed under: Staff Meeting Blues — kryptobrent @ 12:52 pm

After a nice break for the holidays, we had our first staff meeting three days ago. It’s strange–I like everybody at the meetings. I like it when we’re all together. I don’t really have anything against the location. So, with all these elements in place, staff meetings should be a bearable, nay, pleasant experience. Right?

As we finished up Monday morning, it occurred to me:

“Staff meeting is like being stuck in an elevator with two contestants of a chili cookoff, debating the possibility that Hillary Clinton is the AntiChrist.”

Where I Bin?

Filed under: Shallow Thoughts — kryptobrent @ 3:40 pm

The last day I blogged before today was around mid-August. And there are multitudes (3) of you asking when I was going to come back. So what could possibly have kept me so busy that I couldn’t even take a couple of minutes to tell people what’s up? Here’s my top five list of reasons why:

1. I was tired.

2. I was busy.

3. I’m hungry.

4. What are we talking about?

5.

I’m Back.
